Montreux
Montreux is a town of roughly 27,000 inhabitants on the eastern shore of Lake Geneva at the foot of the Alps, in the canton of Vaud, Switzerland. The town stretches along several kilometres of lakefront between the water and the steep mountain slopes, enjoying a sheltered microclimate that allows Mediterranean vegetation including palm trees, cypresses, and magnolias to thrive. This mild setting has earned the area the name Swiss Riviera. Montreux developed as a fashionable resort destination in the 19th century, when the completion of railway connections made it accessible to the European aristocracy and cultural elite. Writers, musicians, and royalty were drawn to the lakeside hotels and the exceptional scenery. The Chateau de Chillon, a medieval fortress on a rocky island just south of town, has been the region's most visited historic monument since the Romantic era; Lord Byron's poem 'The Prisoner of Chillon' made it famous across Europe. The town's cultural credentials were further enhanced when Freddie Mercury of Queen made Montreux his home in his final years, and a bronze statue of the singer on the lakefront has become one of Switzerland's most photographed landmarks. The Montreux Jazz Festival, founded in 1967 by Claude Nobs, is the town's signature event and one of the world's most prestigious music festivals. Held annually over two weeks in July, it attracts major international artists across jazz, rock, pop, and world music genres, with performances in venues ranging from intimate clubs to the lakeside Auditorium Stravinski. Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water' was inspired by a fire at the Montreux Casino during a Frank Zappa concert in 1971, cementing the town's place in rock history. Montreux has a railway station on the main Geneva-Simplon line, with trains to Geneva (about one hour), Lausanne (25 minutes), and through the Simplon Tunnel to Italy. The Goldenpass Line scenic railway departs from Montreux toward Gstaad and Interlaken. The cogwheel railway to Rochers-de-Naye climbs to 2,042 metres, offering Alpine panoramas. The climate is among the mildest in Switzerland, with January averages around 2-3 degrees and summer temperatures reaching 21 degrees in July. The Christmas market along the lakefront draws winter visitors.
Solothurn
Solothurn is a town on the Aare River in northwestern Switzerland, the capital of the canton bearing its name. It is often described as the finest baroque town in Switzerland, with an exceptionally well-preserved old town dating primarily from the 17th and 18th centuries. The town has about 17,000 inhabitants. The old town's centrepiece is the Cathedral of St. Ursus, a neoclassical building with a monumental staircase of 33 steps. Solothurn has an unusual attachment to the number 11: there are 11 churches, 11 chapels, 11 fountains, and 11 towers. The cobblestone streets are lined with painted facades, arcaded passageways, and small shops. The Clock Tower at the western gate dates to the 12th century. Solothurn sits at the foot of the Jura Mountains, with the Weissenstein ridge rising directly above the town to over 1,200 metres. A chairlift runs to the summit, which offers panoramic views of the Alps from the Eiger to Mont Blanc. The Aare River, clean enough for swimming, flows through the centre of town, and locals swim in its current during summer months. The town has good rail connections to Bern (about 30 minutes), Basel, and Zurich. The compact old town is entirely walkable. Solothurn receives fewer tourists than Bern or Lucerne, despite being one of Switzerland's most attractive small towns. The Solothurn Film Festival, held annually in January, is one of the most important Swiss film events.
