Szob is a small town in Pest County, central Hungary, perched on the north bank of the Danube just south and east of the Slovak border. It occupies a strategic position at the northern end of the famous Danube Bend, where the river makes its dramatic southward turn between the Börzsöny and Visegrád mountains. The town covers about 20 square kilometres and has around 2,800 inhabitants. Szob has been a border settlement for much of its history. The Danube formed the frontier between various kingdoms and empires, and the town's location at the river crossing made it a customs and transit point. After the Treaty of Trianon in 1920 redrew Hungary's borders, Szob found itself at the very edge of the country, with Slovakia directly across the Ipoly river to the north. The railway station became an important border checkpoint on the Budapest-Bratislava line. Today Szob functions as a quiet border town and the seat of its district. The main draw is its position at the entrance to the Danube Bend, one of Hungary's most scenic stretches of river landscape. The Börzsöny Mountains rise immediately behind the town, offering hiking trails through beech and oak forests. The town has a small museum, a few cafes, and serves as a starting point for exploring the Danube Bend by car, bicycle, or boat. Szob has a railway station on the Budapest-Bratislava line, with suburban HÉV trains and regional services connecting to Budapest's Nyugati station in about 90 minutes. By car, Budapest is roughly 70 kilometres south. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cool winters. April through October is the best visiting period. The Danube Bend's famous trio of towns, Esztergom, Visegrád, and Szentendre, are all reachable within 30 to 50 minutes by car heading south along the river. Esztergom, with its enormous basilica, is just 20 kilometres southwest. Crossing into Slovakia, Štúrovo is directly opposite Esztergom.
